Sucker Punch
Sucker Punch Review
From the moment I saw the very first footage the week of Comic-Con last year, I knew I wanted to see Sucker Punch and knew exactly why; girls in miniskirts fighting fantastical wars. That being said, I got exactly what I wanted. Sucker Punch is by no means an award winner, but I wanted 2 more hours of what you see in the trailer.
As far as Zack Snyder movies go, this one seems to use his signature bullet-time sequences less than any of his other films. I think he can overdo it sometimes with that, so I welcomed [the lack of] it with open arms. The overall direction of the film is shot almost identically to Watchmen, the way the camera pans, the lighting, and so much more, is very reminiscent of his last film. Like Watchmen, the score is absolutely amazing - especially the opening scene.
However, there were parts of the movie that had some pretty cliched dialogue, granted there isn't a entirely large amount of dialogue to begin with! For me, Sucker Punch is TRON: Legacy all over again. Most critics loathe it for it's simple plot and dialogue and almost solely relying on flashy visuals. But when I go into the theatre wanting a 2 hour music video to watch because it's nice to look at and fun to watch then I got exactly what I came for.
Overall from a filmmaking standpoint, Sucker Punch is probably a 4/10, but like TRON: Legacy, it scores an 8 or so on the enjoyment scale. If you know what you're getting into and pretty girls kicking ass with an amazing soundtrack behind it is what you want to see, then I would say it's worth a watch.
