Due to a conflicting schedule with his latest Wolverine venture, Hugh Jackman, the popular choice to host this years Oscars isn’t available for the job so young stars James Franco and Anne Hathaway have stepped up to the challenge and will be hosting the 83rd Academy Awards ceremony instead.
We’re pleased with the interesting choice and the two will certainly help to attract younger viewers, which seems to be the academy’s aim. Though we can help but think of Hugh who did a fantastic job as host at the 2009 Ceremony, producing the best openign number for years , breaking into a humorous ‘impromtu’ song-and-dance number (Watch it here) to get things started which actually features a cameo by Hathaway who sang and danced with Jackman.
Producers Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer have released a statement saying ‘James Franco and Anne Hathaway personify the next generation of Hollywood icons – fresh, exciting and multi-talented. We hope to create an Oscar broadcast that will both showcase their incredible talents and entertain the world on February 27’. Both actors have hosted Saturday Night Live in the past, Hathaway’s second time being only a few weeks ago where she was charmingly self-deprecative about her nude scenes in her latest film Love and Other Drugs and also gave a killer Katie Holmes impression in one of the skits. They have also both presented awards at the Oscars but this is the extent of their presenting experience thusfar.
Another curious point is that not only is James Franco sure to get a nomination himself for his performance in 127 Hours but Hathaway may also be in with a chance for a nomination for Love and Other Drugs, so they may not in fact be the most practical of choices but we're sure they'll do a great job. They both have sparkling charisma and charm and though there are some who feel they are lacking the gravitas to carry off the job sucessfully we’ll just have to wait and see until Feb 27th to see how they do…
