He may be currently involved in covert shenanigans with his first English-language film Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, but director Tomas Alfredson is already thinking about what he's doing next.
Not one to let the grass grow under his feet, the Let The Right One In helmer will be moving on from the John Le Carre adaptation right into another literature-inspired piece called Larklight.
Mooted as the first part of a possible franchise for Warner Bros., the film will be based on the book by Philip Reeve and will be set in an alternate world where humans made their way into space during the Victorian era.
The story concerns Art Mumby and his sister Myrtle, proud citizens of the British Empire (which in this version of 1851 includes extraterrestrial territories) who live with their father in Larklight, a rambling house that just happens to be traveling through outer space. Chuck in some elephant-sized white spiders, a notorious space pirate, a human-sized blue lizard and a gigantic land crab named Nipper and you've got the ingredients for an interesting flick.
Inspired by the steampunk aesthetic, it's potentially a replacement for the soon-to-end Harry Potter series and could well match the Boy Wizard's adventures in terms of wildly imaginative visuals.
Alfredson may not be an obvious choice to direct the young-adult novel adaptation, after all his films are generally pretty dark, but he has the potential to bring a different spin to what could be a smoky and moody series.
