It seems that yet another Marilyn Monroe biopic is on the table, and yet Scarlett Johansson is nowhere to be seen.
So, producers of My Week with Marilyn, and now Blonde have worked their way through the casting list of every curve-bodied, soft-faced blonde in Hollywood and come up with Michelle Williams for the former, and the rather obscure choice of skinny Naomi Watts for mock-memoir latter.
Seemingly Watts has the disadvantage, being: 1. an Australian born in England 2. less than bootylicious and 3. older than Monroe was when she died by six years. So it is a little bit of a stretch to imagine her taking on the needily pneumatic American pin-up icon.
But, she is a versatile actress, having done serious roles such as Eastern Promises, playing damsel in distress for King Kong and turning her hand to an out-and-out sex-pot for Mulholland Drive. Thus Watts may well be able to capture the multi-faceted character of the woman who had everything, and for whom it all just wasn't enough, especially under the direction of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford helmer Andrew Dominik.
But Williams (like Marilyn herself) is no stranger to Hollywood heartbreak, and knows first-hand how the curse of the silver screen can overshadow a promising career - having lost the of father of her daughter, Heath Ledger, to a drug overdose in early 2008. Plus she has the advantage of youth, plump lips and a breathy delivery (as notably demonstrated in Scorsese's Shutter Island).
So who will make the most convincing Marilyn? And which film will make it to screens first?
