He's been a Gladiator and The Insider, and he's even taken up the mantle of Robin Hood. Now, Russell Crowe is set to become...The Equalizer. The actor has been pegged as the front-runner for playing the lead role in the big-screen version of the original '80s action-adventure show, which starred Edward Woodward.
Crowe would star in the same part as Woodward, as Robert McCall, a chap who used to work for a shady agency doing shady things, before mending his ways by righting wrongs and saving the weak and picked-upon. Apparently, Jason Statham was originally attached to take on the role, but producer Mace Neufeld has now decided that Crowe's brand of tough-guy (and his startling array of accents) is what the movie needs.
The film is currently in development and is looking for a studio to take it on, which could be a bit trickier now that the vaguely similar A-Team was something of a box office disappointment over the weekend in the US. However, we should take into account that it was another remake - The Karate Kid - that wiped the floor with The A-Team and took the top spot, so maybe Hollywood is in the mood for a retro '80s vibe after all. We have to admit we're finding it hard to get excited by this one, although having Crowe in the lead role is bound to spice things up.
