Neil Blomkamp And Sharlto Copley For Elysium

The District 9 team reunite for futuristic thriller… Tuesday, December 7th 2010 | 16:08:09

Neill Blomkamp's newest sci-fi feature may have taken dome time to come to fruition but it seems to be getting underway now with Deadline revealing that District 9 star Sharlto Copley will reteam with the director for this project.

All that is known of the story is that it’s ‘set in the far future on another planet’ which will inevitably draw comparisons with District 9 though Blomkamp has said it will be "hopefully commercial, but it is very much a singular film, that comes directly from me. It is absolutely another science fiction film, quite different from District 9, but some of the blending of genres and the tone might be within the same realm."

Like District 9, though set in an alien landscape it will include sociopolitical reflections on our own society wrapped inside an action, sci-fi setting. As for the title, it stems from greek mythology and Elysium was a section of the Underworld: The Elysian Fields, or the Elysian Plains, were the final resting places of the souls of the heroic and the virtuous.

Deadline have also said that the film has attracted  ‘a lot of interest from every studio. Neill is taking meetings all over town.’ And Sony Pictures are also keen for a District 9 sequel though nothing has been heard from Blomkamp regarding his plans.

We’ll keep you updated with more casting details as we hear them.
