Monsters Director Gareth Edwards Hired For Godzilla Project

Award winning British director Gareth Edwards tapped by Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros for major new monster movie Wednesday, January 5th 2011 | 18:05:14

Variety report this morning that Gareth Edwards' second film after his low-budget 2009 sci-fi hit Monsters is set to be a remake of Godzilla with the fabled team of Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros (the partnership behind The Dark Knight, Inception and the upcoming Superman) producing.

Development of the new Godzilla began in 2007 when Legendary secured the rights from  Toho. Co, the Japanese film company who have overseen over 25 outings for the legendary monster including the most recent Roland Emmerich version ten years ago.

Edwards, who will also have a hand in redrafting the existing Dave Callaham penned screenplay, attracted a lot of attention with the critically acclaimed Monsters - a film he made on shoe-string budget with minimal resources about two Americans journeying through a quarantined zone in Mexico infested with aliens - wowed festival and multiplex audiences worldwide. It was only a matter of time before he was picked out to helm a major studio tentpole production.

Reports suggest production is imminent with a planned 2012 release and with a director of Edwards skills and the producers of some of the highest quality blockbusters of recent years behind it, this is certainly a project we're going to be keeping a close eye on as further news emerges.
