It didn't come as much of a surprise when the organisers of Cannes announced today that Woody Allen's latest romantic comedy Midnight in Paris, which happens to star President Sarko's missus, Carla Bruni, will be opening the 64th installment of the festival on May 11th. Woody has long favoured the glitzy and glamourous stage of the calendar's most prestigious festival - where fights broke out in the press queues for his last offerings - for the unveiling of his new films but they are never screened in competition so opening night is the highest profile and honour Cannes could bestow him... As well as France's first lady, a singer and former model, the film also stars Marion Cotillard, Michael Sheen, Rachel McAdams, and Owen Wilson as the various characters in a story about an American family who travel to Paris for a working holiday, fall in love with the city but are then forced to confront the illusion that a life different from their own is actually better. We're hoping Allen presents a crowd pleaser, something more Love in the Afternoon (Billy Wilder's classic Paris set comedy starring Gary Cooper and Audrey Hepburn) than Taken (Pierre Morel's humdrum Paris-set affair) and will be down on Croisette come May to bring you all the news from what will almost certainly be the hottest ticket of the year.
