Meryl Streep To Play Margaret Thatcher?
Actress in talks with Mamma Mia! director
Thursday, July 1st 2010 | 11:09:27
Meryl Streep is in talks to join forces once again with Mamma Mia! director Phyllida Lloyd, but this time for a very different kind of film. Streep is in talks to play the Iron Lady herself in Lloyd's new biopic about Margaret Thatcher, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Jim Broadbent is supposedly in discussions with a view to playing Maggie's husband, Dennis.
Thatcher, which is being developed by the BBC and Pathe and produced by Damian Jones, follows the former prime minister as she tries to save her career during the 17 days preceding the 1982 Falklands War. The 2 1/2-month war was a turning point for the Prime Minister, who, after Britain's victory, saw her approval ratings double and went on to win a second term in office.
Barring the possibility that Lloyd will have Streep and Broadbent prancing about on a Greek Island, this has the potential to be pretty good. We don't think anyone's seen the best of the Mamma Mia! director yet and if she does manage to get acting talent like Meryl and Jim on board, at least we know the performances will be good. Unless they bring in Pierce Brosnan to wail for a few minutes at some point during the film, this could be one worth watching...
Thoughts on casting Streep as the formidable ex-PM? Could this finally be her Oscar break?
