Disney is having another crack at the classic fairytale of Cinderella, with plans for a live-action movie version of the much loved children's story. For many of us, the old animated Disney film, now made over 60 years ago, remains the most iconic adaptation of the tale, and Deadline reports that Disney is at it again with a script written by The Devil Wears Prada writer Aline Brosh McKenna.
This all sounds very interesting, but we can't help but be reminded of 1998's Ever After with Drew Barrymore, or even 2004's A Cinderella Story, which starred Hilary Duff. Both movies, though admittedly not Disney films, were clearly live-action offerings of the Cinderella tale. However, these attempts at the classic fairytale both added some sort of special twist to the adventure. A straight up, live-action Cinderella movie with big budget special effects and all the Disney trappings could be interesting.
As for what form this particular Cinderella redo will take, details remain under wraps. Disney has confirmed it'll keep the title as Cinderella, but there's no news on choice of director or casting for the lead role. An obvious favourite for the part is Scarlett Johansson, after she appeared in a 2007 Annie Leibovitz poster as the character. And it would be an added bonus for Scarlett if Disney decided to make their Cinderella reprisal into a musical, as the star has been trying to get that singing career off the ground for some time. Who would you put your money on to bag the classic role?
