DiCaprio To Play A Serial Killer In Devil In The White City

But we’ll still love him… Tuesday, November 2nd 2010 | 11:34:23

After having his eye on this project since 2002 Leonardo DiCaprio must be leaping for joy at aquiring the rights to Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic And Madness At The Fair That Changed America, the book following the actions of serial killer Dr. HH Holmes.

Dicaprio will play Holmes who, during the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago, killed between 27 and 200 people becoming one of America’s first serial killer. Tom Cruise was initially developing a similar project based on the book years ago prompting DiCaprio and his production company Appian Way to create a rival project using public domain information. Needless to say, neither project came to fruition and as soon as the rights to the book became available Dicaprio snapped them up.

Known for always choosing complicated and challenging roles and struggling hard to lose his Titanic heart-throb image, DiCaprio would be excellent in the role which is likely to be the darkest he has played. Hoover had been described by Deadline as a sociopath who 'used charm and guile to lure guests into what became known as a 'murder castle,' a haunt that had a gas chamber, crematorium and a dissecting table where Holmes would murder his victims and strip their skeletons to sell for medical and scientific study.'

Currently shooting Clint Eastwood's | J Edgar Hoover biopic in which he will play the lead character, and rumored to be starring in Baz Luhrmann remake of The Great Gatsby - there seems no doubt that DiCaprio can pull off charming and has had some dark and psychological roles with Shutter Island and The Aviator among others.

With this news and the fact he consistently gives excellent performances, we're looking forward to seeing more of his work. But what do you think? Let us know your thoughts in the comments box below.
