Colin Firth’s Gambit

He’s lining up the remake as his next project Tuesday, December 14th 2010 | 12:15:02

From his award winning turn in A Single Man, the nervous monarch in The King's Speech to slipping through windows to steal a priceless statue, Colin Firth is flashing versatility credentials we didn’t know he had. Deadline informs us he’s in talks to take on the lead in a remake of the 1966 cat burglar caper Gambitt, which originally starred Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine.

The film would see Firth as cat burglar Harry Dean with a plan to steal a valuable statue from a billionaire. Central to his plan is waitress Nicole Chang, who happens to be the spitting image of the billionaire’s wife, the problem is Harry and Nicole become romantically involved and as those Ocean's Eleven boys know only too well, nothing complicates a robbery like a love story…

Michael Hoffman, director of The Last Station is aboard, and Joel and Ethan Coen are rumoured to have written a new script. Firth will have to finish shooting Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy before taking on Gambit, which should give them enough time to find a perfect leading lady for him to burgle alongside.

Think it’s worth a remake? Let us know whether you’re in the mood for a Colin Firth caper below.
