After a lengthy search and much speculation, the role for Catwoman in Christopher Nolan's third addition to the Batman franchise, The Dark Knight Rises has been cast and Anne Hathaway will play the role having beaten strong contenders Jessica Biel and Keira Knightley.
Nolan's press release stated "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story,".
Tom Hardy, having worked with Nolan on Inception had also been cast as an unknown villain, which has now been identified as Bane. Nolan has said, "I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman's most formidable enemies." One of the most intelligent and physically strong villains from the comic, Bane even broke Batman's back in one issue. He also made an appearance in the 1997 Batman and Robin and though this depiction was widely criticised, we remain confident in both Nolan and Hardy's ability to revamp the character especially after his scene-stealing performances in Inception and Bronson.
We're also excited about Hathaway's appearance and like that Nolan is continuing his two villain to one bat theme (Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul in Batman Begins, and The Joker and Two-Face in The Dark Knight). It looks like she's in for quite a year: co-hosting the Oscars with James Franco in February, receiving a golden Globe nomination for her performance in Love and Other Drugs and only the other day announcing that she'll be making a guest appearance on hit show Glee.
With all the main roles cast with some talented performers all there is to do now is eagerly await July 20th 2012... and hope hope hope that there'll be a thrilling teaser to sustain us long before then.
