first of all, as an action film sherlock holmes ticks all the boxes and has undoubtedly created a whole new legion of holmes fans and for that, thank you mr.richie. i know a host of holmes writers and they are divided on both the quality of the film, and whether it has the right balance between a modern take on a great detective, and staying true to the original. several of the smaller touches are accurate - holmes didn't have a deerstalker hat in the books, that was just added for television etc. some will argue that if richie wanted to truly depict holmes he would have gone further as he comes across as petulant and arrogant in the film, whereas in the books he was bordering on the unpleasant - especially towards women. if you are looking to get closer to the real sherlock holmes then read the originals and some of the books that give an insight into his and his creator conan doyle's lives - close to holmes: a look at the connections between historical london, sherlock holmes and sir arthur conan doyle amongst others. if you just want a rollercoaster movie set in victorian london then this will fit the bill easily. roll on the sequel(s).

being a great fan of jeremy brett as sherlock holmes i had some reservations about the film but i thoroughly enjoyed it. a bit of poetic licence used by ritchie, overall a great film and i am now waiting for the sequel.

although looking forward to it, i was still abit skeptical as to whether i would enjoy this or not. lo, behold, i thought it was a great movie and would definitely recommend it. it's just over two hours and most movies that long make me move around but with this one the two hours went by fast. if there is another sherlock holmes movie, i sure hope it is as good as the first.

i will be going to see this. i saw a trailer for it and it seams a little different from the normal run of the mill sherlock holmes which i find rather boring. there appears to be a little more action in this version. i hope that i am correct in thinking that as i am going to see it

up, district 9 and star trek xi were my favourites this year. however, the year still has 11 days left, so maybe avatar or sherlock holmes will be in my top 3!

i'll be going to see this despite my reservations about it. my main problem is that i think they have totally miscast the main characters. downey jr. should have been dr. watson and law should have been holmes. as good as the trailer looks, the miscasting doesn't sit right with the characters of holmes and dr. watson at all. it's like they've had a personality switch and what we'll be watching is some bizarro world version of sherlock holmes.
