Gainsbourg

Gainsbourg Film Image
Synopsis

From visionary graphic artist and director Joann Sfar comes a completely original take on one of France's greatest mavericks, the illustrious and infamous Serge Gainsbourg. GAINSBOURG is an enchanting glimpse at his early life, growing up in 1940s Nazi- occupied Paris, and through his successful song-writing years in the 1960s until his death in 1991. Taking the best from LA VIE EN ROSE and AMELIE, GAINSBOURG is one of 2010's highly awaited films brought to us by one of the most beloved graphic artists of our time and the team behind the magical creatures of PAN'S LABYRINTH.

hey first 4 movies, thanks for your email inviting me to a screening of gainsbourg which amongst many other films i would love to see. unfortunately there were no screening venues anywhere near where i live in the northeast of england so i wasn't able to take you up on your kind offer. however, i do hope that you will consider placing some of your future screenings here. there is a very strong film following in the northeast particularly around newcastle and durham. it would be great if that could be reflected in your future choice of locations. please email me again with your future offers.

i enjoyed it, although i did think the second half was a bit "one damn thing after another". i thought lucy gordon was spot on as jane birkin and eric elmosnino nothing short of marvellous (although he did have a scary resemblance to shane mcgowan at times). i've got a dvd of gainsbourg tv performances at home, and i was fascinated by the way the film re-created a lot of these, whether directly or slyly. i can see how some people might not like la gueule or the juif-monster, but i thought they worked well. they allowed some examination of gainsbourg's psychology without being over-serious or clunky. i'd recommend the film to anyone with a love of gainsbourg (and ideally, a little knowledge of the outline of his life)

sorry to be posting a more negative review than the others, but, although being of a 'certain age', i thought the film was a mess. i found the 'alter ego' with the stuck on hooter and ears totally ridiculous and pretentious, and jane birkin should sue over for her portrayal by the 'wooden' lucy gordon. on the positive side, the guy playing gainsbourg (eric elmosnino) was terrific and got over the self-destructive side of serge's personality. it did end far too abrupty (as noted by notechal), and there were some serious omissions - notably his use of daugther charlotte to record 'lemon incest', and the infamous interview with whitney houston (still what gainsbourg is best known for among the younger generation). i would also have been good to end with his funeral, which was notable for being attended by more people than those for certain presidents. overall, a disappointment and a missed opportunity.

after wasting 2 1/2 hours that i'll never get back on 'inception' last week, it was a real 'plaisir' to lose myself in this wonderful reminder of what films and film making are really supposed to be about. the cast is astonishing (i can't remember the last time i saw so many beautiful and talented women in the same film) and eric elmosnino's gainsbourg will be one of the performances of his career. although i tend to agree with the poster who said that its greatest appeal will be to 'people of a certain age' (i.e. my age - fiftysomething!) i will nevertheless be recommending 'gainsbourg' to cinemagoing friends of all ages, as i do feel that its general appeal is very broad. merveillieux!
