Dinner for Schmucks

Synopsis

Paul Rudd plays Tim, an up-and-coming executive who has just received his first invitation to the "dinner for schmucks," a monthly event hosted by his boss that promises bragging rights to the exec that shows up with the biggest buffoon. Tim's fiancée Julie finds it distasteful and Tim agrees to skip the dinner, until he bumps into Barry (Steve Carell) - an IRS employee who devotes his spare time to building elaborate taxidermy mouse dioramas - and quickly realizes he's struck idiot gold. Tim can't resist, and invites Barry, whose blundering good intentions soon sends Tim's life into a frenzied downward spiral and a series of misadventures, threatening a major business deal, bringing crazy stalker ex-girlfriend, Darla, back into Tim's life and driving Julie into the arms of another man. Remake of the 1988 French film, "LE DINER DE CONS," directed by Francis Veber.

got to see a preview of dinner for schmucks today ............... steve carell's a bit of golden boy at the moment so i wen't along with reasonably high expectations. delighted to say that this was better than expected and was very, very funny. very well scripted throughout. tim (paul rudd) has pretensions of being a high flyer in the financial world and in order to make the next step he has to bring an eccentric / idiot along to a dinner where budding and established execs try to out-do each other by parading the weirdist 'schmuck', the schmucks assembled obviously not being aware of the reason for their attendance. steve carrell as barry (the main schmuck in question) plays the role brilliantly. i had lost faith in lucy punch after seeing her in the recent bbc detective comedy 'vexed' and she plays the role of darla (an unwanted blast from tim's past) brilliantly. would highly recommend - if you want a laugh it ticks all the right boxes and barry's taxidermy expertise provides a twist in the (mouses !) tale at the end !!
